DAFFY DUCK

Daffy Duck is one of the most notable Warner Brothers cartoon characters, having starred in 133 shorts. In many episodes, he “plays” alongside Porky Pig, while in others, he is in a vigorous feud with Bugs Bunny. Daffy speaks with a distinguishable lisp. When Daffy Duck was first created, his image used to be one of a regular duck. During the years though, he gained more human features, just like many other Warner Bros characters.

Definitely one of the most popular and widely accepted cartoon character on TV, Daffy Duck appeared on television for the first time in 1937, April 17 to be precise. Porky’s Duck Hunt gave the popular duck its first TV appearance. Its first TV appearance was very popular and had many viewers glued to their television set especially as they fell in love with the duck character that was straight-forward and somewhat blunt. It has a high-pitched voice that came from impersonating Leon Schlesinger – the producer. The irony was that he never knew it was an impersonation of his voice despite the fact that he found it funny.

The character’s popularity saw an extreme increase in the twentieth century after it starred in more than 40 movies, with each movies having a different setting. It also made appearances in a number of movies by Warner Bros. with other cartoon characters like Yosemite Sam, Porky pig and Elmer Fudd, with the duck being the prey and the other characters as the hunter. Daffy’s character changed in the early forties from being a maniac duck no one could control. The character changed in 1948 as a result of Chuck Jones and the fifties, it tried ideas that were completely new.

Chuck Jones decided to portray the character as one that lusted for money and the cartoon series Daffy Dilly and You Were Never Duckier. The cartoon series also turned Daffy from being an indifferent character to one that wanted power and was swallowed in greed. The look of the character also got some changes as it grew taller, lost some weight and had a larger beak. The transformed character was primarily motivated by money and this was made obvious in the Ali Baba cartoon release in 1954.

His greedy years as they were tagged, were between 1954 – 97, and the cartoons released during this period were masterpieces. Looney Tunes took advantage of the popular character and the character appeared regularly in the 1960 releases of the show. Since its first appearance on TV screens, the character has made its appearance in several cartoon series and movies and the Space Jam movie released in 1996 that had Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny as co-stars.

Daffy Duck remains one of the most popular cartoon series of all time and continues to increase in acceptance and popularity. The current character on TV screens is the Chuck Jones version.
