Tweety is the cute little canary bird, who enjoys swinging on the sway in its cage and singing. He has a strange manner of speaking, replacing Ls and Rs with Ws, hence his popular catchphrase: “I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat” (I thought I saw a pussycat). This particular cat is actually Sylvester the cat, who is Tweety’s onscreen partner in many of the cartoons.

Tweety is one of the most popular characters in the series of animated cartoons produced by Warner Bros. The long lashes and the voice of Tweety has created a debatable gender as while in some episodes Tweety is regarded as a female, it appears in other episodes addressed as a male. Its species is also unclear as even when it is originally portrayed as a canary, it is sometimes called a Tweety bird. Regardless of what people think, this yellow-feathered creature remains a famous and well-accepted cartoon character across the globe.

It made its first appearances in the works of Bob Clampett where it appeared as an aggressive creature that does all it can to ensure its enemy is defeated. The cartoon Birdy and the Beast portrayed one of such moments in a very conspicuous manner. Friz Freleng role as the director of the cartoon series brought a toned down Tweety but would occasionally get angry and bring on its malicious side.

As mentioned earlier, the character was created by Bob Clampett as far back as 1942 when it appeared in a short play titled A Tale of Two Kitties. This featured the bird alongside two cats – Babbit and Castello, who were, by the way, hungry cats and the bird named Orson.

Just like many of Mel Blanc’s cartoon character, Tweety was not left out of the speech impediment issues as she had problems with the /s/, /k/, and /g/ sounds. For example, its “pussy cat” is pronounced as “putty tat”, and the list goes on. Liquid sounds like /I/ and /r/ were also a source of pronunciation problem for it.

Regardless of the character’s pronunciation abilities or character, it remains a very popular face on many TV screens across the globe and since its first appearance, it has continued to thrill lovers of cartoon with hilarious acts that have made it even more popular as it has made appearances outside, the traditional cartoon series making appearances in comic books along with other cartoon characters like Sylvester. It has also made appearances in a number of video games like games The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout, Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal, Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters, Looney Tunes: Space Race, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2.
