GOOFY – FAMOUS DISNEY CHARACTER

Along with Donald and Mickey Mouse, Goofy is the most famous Disney character. He is not very intelligent and rather clumsy, but always joyous and friendly. In the comic books, he stars in, he sometimes appears as his alter-ego Super Goof, a superhero with powers similar to those of Superman, which he gains after eating a special type of peanuts.

Goofy is not just a funny Disney character, it is definitely a well-nurtured one that got its name from the fact that is not too bright. It has become a part of Mickey’s Gang after several years of consistent association with them. Regardless of its silly nature, Goofy remains one of the most loved Disney characters.

Its first appearance on TV screens came as a result of being a part of the audience in Mickey’s Revue back in 1932. What a great way of making your presence felt by crunching peanuts and laughing very loud. It did not take long before other members had enough of its disturbance and two of the spectators knocked him out with a mallet, imitating his laughter as they did so. This was probably what shot Goofy into limelight and there has been no going back since then.

It once took on the appearance of an old man with a puffy tail and no pants. The voice was done by Pinto Colvig who coincidentally was a clown and musician.

It didn’t take long before Goofy became a common face on another cartoon series. It was a member of the crew that had other characters like Minnie, Pluto, Horace Horsecollar, and Clarabelle Cow as members.

Before it was changed in 1938 to Dippy the Goof, its initial name was Dippy Dawg. It got its name Goofy in 1939 with the release of the ‘Goofy and Wilbur’ cartoon.

Not every cartoon character had its abilities like being able to speak and being similar to a human character.

A huge fraction of its own cartoons was made in the forties and fifties, appearing in other cartoon series, with the likes of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

The “how to” cartoon series that featured Goofy was also a source of fame for the character, making its name with many mishaps.

Its appearance in the fifties was as Mr. Geef where he had a family and a wife and son.

There was also a reintroduction in the nineties with only his son featuring this time around with the wife’s voice only heard from the background.

Its more recent appearance was as a widower and a single father.

Sayings like ‘Gwash’ , A-hyuck!’, ‘Huh,’ and ‘Well, whaddya know…’  were its favourites.

The Art Babbit and Frank Webb continue to ring a humorous bell in the heads of those that were fortunate enough to see it.
