Foghorn Leghorn is a popular American cartoon character that has made an appearance in several cartoon series include one that bears the name of the character, Foghorn Leghorn. The character was created by Robert McKimson and appeared in the Looney Tunes and Merrie melodies cartoons from the Warner Bros outfit.
Its first appearance came in 1946; the period regarded as the Golden Age of American Animation and went on to show in about 28 cartoons.
The character appears as a large white adult Leghorn rooster that has a stereotypic Southern accent. Foghorn Leghorn was also portrayed as a lover of mischief. He is also a loud and obnoxious chicken, as suggested by the name.
Walky Talky Hawky was the first TV appearance that featured Foghorn, which was a film by the way. All its other cartoon appearances that starred Foghorn Leghorn were directed by Robert Mckimson with Tasmanian Devil vying with Foghorn as the character that is most popular with Robert.
Foghorn had a partner or rather a nemesis in the barnyard Dawg. Foghorn is usually the aggressor but eventually founds himself on the losing end of the gag. The gag is initiated by Foghorn when he spanks Dawy while he is sleeping. Dawg subsequently chases after Foghorn being angered by his act, barking with anger but unfortunately, the rope that ties the Dawg restricts his movement and he is unable to get to Foghorn as the rope either yanks him back or stops him. The latter stage of the gag sees Dawg barking at Foghorn. He is teased and forced to stop barking by Foghorn. Foghorn’s grandson inherited this mischievous act in Feather Bluster, that had Leghorn wondering how his grandson had such a ridiculous behaviour and the Dog was more than happy to remind him of his days with the statement: “Ain’t nothin’ wrong with ‘im, Foggy, ‘cept that he takes afteryou.”
A weasel that went by the name of Bill was featured in a number of episodes with Foghorn Leghorn who made an attempt to eat him at the initial stage but eventually teamed up together to frustrate Dawg.
Mel Blanc created the voice of Foghorn, with the likes of Jeff Bergman, Joe Alaskey, Bill Farmer, Greg Burson, Jeff Glen Bennett and Frank Gorshin later performing the voice.
Foghorn also made cameo appearances in False Hare, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Superior Duck and later appearances in Tweety’s High-Flying Adventure Looney Tunes: Back in Action Cock-A-Doodle Duel and GEICO commercial, all voiced by Jeff Bennett.
